Mr. Artesza Portee

Frederick Douglass High School

I would like to officially begin our school year and welcome you to what will be an incredible year. Even with the reality that we will not be walking onto our campus every day in the new school year, I am committed to quality teaching taking place virtually and I can assure you that learning will not stop. I have confidence that I am working alongside some of the most talented and dedicated teachers and support staff in Atlanta Public Schools. Our teachers and support staff have come together with hope, vision and excitement to take care of our students and families amid these trying times.

I am excited to be apart of the Astro family, creating an environment where students love to learn, teachers inspire, the community engages, and students graduate ready for college, career and life. Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!

"When you enter a situation, and you know the success of not only young minds but also young lives depend on your leadership and your ability to make the right decisions; you experience many sleepless nights. But, I know I was built for this."  - Artesza Portee

About Me

After graduating from University Central Florida, I went directly into the classroom. While teaching, I attended the University of South Florida and in 1999, after five years of teaching in Tampa, Florida, I decided to pack my bags and take my talents to Atlanta, Georgia, as a teacher at Price Middle School. In 2002, only three short years later, I was promoted to Assistant Principal. In 2010, I was the Academy Leader at Benjamin E. Mays High School, where I wrote the design for a small school (a school within a school) Business & Entrepreneurship.

In 2011, I received the honor of becoming the Principal at Sylvan Hills Middle School. It was there that I learned and experienced the highs and lows of educational leadership.

My many leadership experiences have led me to new territory here at Frederick Douglass High School and I am excited about the new heights in which we are headed.
